I have been researching social science and public policy issues at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) since 1994. I received my doctorate in economics from University of California Berkley in 1994. Prior to that I worked in Juneau as a public policy analyst from 1976 to 1985. ISER is part of the College of Business and Public Policy at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), where I have a joint appointment in the Department of Public Administration. I teach research methods. My research interests center on human development and well-being in Arctic communities. Current research themes include:
Social Capital, social ties and well-being: Social ties are the most important factor for well-being. The subsistence economy is rich in sharing relations and strong social ties. The cash economy is characterized by a more diverse set of weak ties. What are the social effects of increasing integration in the cash economy?
Socioeconomics of mining and oil and gas: What are the net benefits for local communities of mining or oil and gas development? What factors determine the relative benefits?
Business development in remote communities: How do remoteness and community factors predict patterns of business activity in rural Alaska?
I am also actively involved in ProCreativity, a media project for teen and young parents.
I enjoy parenting, hiking and back-country skiing.
